Peacefully at the Brantford General Hospital on Thursday March 4, 2021. Kleis (Kees) Hensen in his 92nd year. Dad was lovingly cared for by family members as he struggled with the ravages of Alzheimer's disease and dementia for the last number of years. Dad is survived by his 5 sons and daughters-in-law: Kleis & Mary Jane, John & Ruth, William & Janet, Edward & Lori, Philip & Shelley, 21 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, a younger brother Art & Joan, sister-in-law Mien Hensen in Ontario along with many nieces and nephews in Canada and the Netherlands. Dad was predeceased by his wife Joanna (2013) and a grandson Jeremy (1986). Dad and our Mom (Joanna) emigrated from the Netherlands in 1952.  Kees was a visionary Christian entrepreneur who built his own home in Brantford, co-founded and established a local Tool & Die company, and was President of ITML Inc: a manufacturer of horticultural growing containers and products for the North American market made from recycled, reprocessed plastic from Dekka Resins. Kees was recognized by his peers when awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year award. Dad had an unwavering and uncompromising desire to honour God with his life (Psalm 26), to promote and establish local Christian education at BCS, secondary Christian education at HDCH, and post secondary studies at Redeemer University. Kees took great delight in worshiping his Lord Jesus Christ with his family locally at The Christian Reformed Church in Brantford and singing with the Ambassadors Christian Male Choir. Dad was an accomplished draftsman, Professional Engineer, and in later years re-established himself as an enthusiastic artist. As a philanthropic mentor, Dad helped establish the Hensen Foundation which continues to support local charitable and mission organizations. As a Christian entrepreneur, Kees was a strong visionary mentor to promote and establish several other businesses in Brantford. His strong work ethic and walk of faith legacy lives on in his 5 sons and their families. A service to celebrate Dad’s life and God's faithfulness, will take place some time in the future at Hope Christian Reformed Church, Brantford, Ontario. Arrangements entrusted to the TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross Street, Brantford A private family interment will take place at Farringdon Cemetery, Brantford. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Brantford Christian School ( or Christian School Foundation ( would be gratefully appreciated.

I’ve always looked fwd to and enjoyed our big family get-togethers. Back in the day, when I was just a kid, Grandpa and Grandma used to host these gatherings at their home in Brantford. I loved and still love the feeling of being part of a family that gathers and wants to share dedicated time together. This prioritization of family has been deeply rooted for me. I loved visiting the front office at ITML over the years. Grandpa never failed to make time for me and invite me into his office to say hi and visit, even if only for a few minutes, and this gesture always made me feel welcome and special too. Grandpa never wasted time - his or anyone else’s - and he moved about his days w/ a deep sense of purpose and conviction. It’s always been a mysterious kind of thing to witness because he never paraded around explaining himself. He just lived w/ intention and had a deep sense of calling in his life and it was noticeable. Not everyone has this or learns how to discover it for themselves. And it shouldn’t be something so rare in this world but it is. Grandpa had many interests and talents outside of his business/work life! And I like to think I inherited this gene myself! He baked, sailed, swam laps, played the organ, raised some of the most well-behaved dogs on the planet, was an avid gardener, participated in a letter-writing prison ministry, was a devoted husband, father of 5 sons, grandfather, and great-grandfather, etc., etc., etc. There are too many things to mention! I once went on a very memorable road trip with Grandpa and Grandma to Word of Life Schroon Lake. I had an absolute blast the entire trip but especially remember the drive to and from the camp. I got to drive in a fancy Lincoln Town Car, with Grandpa and Grandma, eat food they brought from a cooler along the way, and find out that Grandpa wasn’t the best of drivers (like, I remember it being a shock to discover there was something he wasn’t good at! Lol). I loved sitting in church with Grandpa (and Grandma too). I have memories of both of them singing the great and beautiful hymns next to me (often by memory and in different keys) and love that I get to continue holding and carrying their voices with me. When I sing to my baby each night I remember their singing - their steadfast worship and it makes my heart glad. Lastly. Some words/ideas that come to mind as I reflect on Grandpa’s character: disciplined, organized, moderation, humility, conviction, god-honoring, and faithful servant. I could comment on each of these things but suffice to say Grandpa embodied these things and taught us a great deal through how he lived. He has left a great legacy and will be greatly missed.

Our sincerest sympathy to your family on the loss of your father and grandfather. We remember Mr. Hensen with great fondness. He and Mrs. Hensen would always make it point to come for a visit to see us while we were in Canada. Our family would visit Kleis and Mary Jane and family and Mr Hensen was so gracious in taking us for a boat ride or going to their house for outside barbecue. We are grateful to have known him and his entire family. We hope to be able to visit again.

We are so saddened by this loss for you all, but take joy in that your dad has reached his goal- to be safe in the arms of Jesus. He was always a man who never shied away from his faith In Jesus from those around him- something we should all learn from . He always showed admiration and great love for your mother and his sons. It was a blessing for me to have known and experienced his kindness to me all these years.
With our deepest condolences, Mike and Sandra Veer
