Obituary for Antoni Jozef Labanowicz

Antoni Jozef Labanowicz
It is with great sadness that we announce that Antoni Jozef Labanowicz passed away peacefully and faithfully with the guided spirit of our Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ. He was surrounded by his devoted family at the Brantford General Hospital. Antoni is survived by his beloved wife, Maria, and their three children Henry, Wanda, and Juliana (Blake Justice), as well as three grandchildren, Christopher, Emily and Joey.
Born in Poland, Antoni joined the Polish Armed Forces after the outbreak of WWII. He was a member of the British 8th Army, Polish Second Corps, 12t Podolski Lancers under the command of General Anders.
As a young man, Antoni served in the Middle East and Italy from 1942 to 1946. His regiment fought with distinction at the Battle of Monte Cassino. It was one of the hardest fought battles of World War II in impossible circumstances.
The motto of the Polish Armed Forces in Italy was:
For Your Freedom and Ours’
We Polish Soldiers,
Gave our souls to God,
Our lives to the soil of Italy,
And our hearts to Poland.
After the war, Antoni made his home in Canada where he became a proud Polish Canadian and met his future wife, Maria Tomera, in Montreal. He married and settled happily to help raise three children in Brantford, Ontario. His devotion and dedication to God, family life, nature, gardening, reading, social and cultural activities are reminders of how he loved life to its fullest. Generously, he contributed to over 40 years of volunteer work in the community. We wish to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to the staff of the Brantford General Hospital for their compassion, unrelenting service and care during Dad’s final days. The family will receive friends at the DENNIS TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross Street, Brantford on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 from 7- 9p.m. Rosary to be recited at 8 p.m. that evening. Mass of Christian Burial to be held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 235 Brant Ave. Brantford on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
