Condolences

Condolence From: Jam Michael McDonald
Condolence: Mrs. Bailey was my grade eight teacher at Woodman in 1998, and my badminton coach from 2001 until I graduated from PJ in 2003. I thought to look her up today and am incredibly saddened to hear of her passing.

Mrs. Bailey was one of the most influential people in my young adult life. She was encouraging while joking, inspiring while keeping it real. Grade eight was one of the best school years of my life and that's because of her.

She saved badminton at PJ—we were stuck without a coach and couldn't practice without one—giving up multiple nights a week for regular practice and taking us to tournaments. I'm now a competitive badminton player, playing several national tournaments every year, with my first international in Paris next year, and I owe all of that to her. I was a huge nerd and needed a push in that direction that she gave, so I wouldn't have had the initial practice time without her. Badminton is now a huge part of my life, keeping me active, and I know she'd be happy about that.

One moment that stands out to me: the day before the teachers' strike was set to enact in our grade eight year, Mrs. Bailey sat us down and talked about what that meant and how to keep busy. But she got a little choked up, knowing we'd be missing out on valuable time, and it was the first time I remember seeing a teacher be that vulnerable.

I wish I'd looked her up sooner, to have a chance to catch up, or say goodbye. That said, because she was such an incredible mentor and teacher, I'm sure that as I thought of her from time to time, she thought of me and all her hundreds of students as well.

To her family, know that Genni Bailey helped direct so many young people and enriched their lives more than most. Too many teachers treat teaching as a job; Mrs. Bailey treated it as an honour and an opportunity to make a difference, which she absolutely did.

Genni, you'll be missed.

Condolence: Mrs. Bailey, You opened my world as my sixth grade teacher. You taught me to be a questionable consumer when the food I consumed was playing apart in depleting Amazonian Rainforests and affecting the lives of their Indigenous peoples, you made made me realize the power and insight our First Nation's Peoples had when it came to art and spirituality, eventually leading me to see the gross disenfranchisement and injustice they face in our Canadian history, and finally you showed me the grim evils of apartied regimes when you had us watch and absorb the movie "Cry Freedom"; Steven Bekoe is a name I will know forever because of you. Oh, and with your "house design" unit, I dreamed from the age of 11 to own and furnish my first home.

I am so happy I reached out to you years ago to tell you that when I faced the worry that I couldn't, as an educator, fathom that I could create a deep and insightful program for grade sixes, it was because of you and your ability to do it, for a class that was mostly monocultural, that I realized in 2007, nearly 14 years later, I was able to because you did it so magnificently.

You spoke to me today. I was in a First Nations activity circle, and was talking about allies and how teachers can make a difference and face resistance when taking on these topics, but my sixth grade teacher did it, and though it may have fell on deaf ears back then, you did it no less. I spoke of you today, and then I got an e-mail informing me of your passing.

Thank you for staying in touch with me over the years, and thinking of me from time to time. I will cherish those e-mails now. I am a better person and teacher because of you. I should have made a better effort to be in touch. I will think of you fondly for the remainder of my career. With love always, may you be at peace and may your family love you from afar forever and always....

Condolence: Erica, Mark, and Dave:

Shock and sadness are what I've been feeling ever since learning of Genni's passing. I got to know her several years ago through our local Canadian Parents for French chapter, and always knew her as a leader and tireless worker. Erica and Mark, you were both two of my favourite students at North Park, and remain so to this day. I wish I could have been in Brantford to see all of you. A la prochaine.
